SPAULDING, James
(Indianapolis, Indiana, 30-7-1937)
Saxophone alto, flûtes

Elevé à Indianapolis, il est le troisème d'une famille de sept enfants. Son père est un guitariste professionnel, leader d'un groupe nommé les Brown Buddies. La famille reçoit de temps à autre la visite d'un ami : le pianiste Teddy Wilson. James Spaulding grandit dans un environnement musical et commence par étudier le bugle, la trompette et la clarinette. Au saxophone, il est largement autodidacte. Il forme son premier groupe alors qu'il est lycéen : le Monarch Combo. Parmi les musiciens qu'il rencontre à cette époque figure Roland Kirk qu'accompagne Melvin Rhyne, lui aussi originaire de Indianapolis. De 1954 à 1957, il remplit ses obligations militaires et joue dans des ensembles militaires. Son premier engagement professionnel se fait dans le cadre du groupe The Jazz Contemporaries qui comprennent Freddie Hubbard (tp), Larry Ridley (b), Paul Parker (dm) et Walter Miller (p). A partir de 1957, grâce à la G.I. Bill, il s'installe à Chicago où il suit quelques temps des études musicales à la Cosmopolitan School of Music. Il étudie la pratique de la flûte avec Emil Eck, membre du Chicago Symphony Orchestra. De 1957 à 1960, il fait partie de l'orchestre de Sun Ra et se produit aussi dans le groupe du pianiste Sonny Thompson et de la chanteuse Lulu Reed. Il retourne ensuite à Indianapolis où il se produit avec son propre groupe et a l'occasion de jammer avec Wes Montgomery ; il joue aussi à Idlewild (Michigan), New York, Detroit.

A son installation à New York en 1961, il fait partie du quintet de Freddie Hubbard, avec lequel il collaborera jusqu'au début des années 70. A partir de 1966, il se produit aussi avec Randy Weston et devient membre du quintet de Max Roach, il joue également avec Roy Haynes. En parallèle, il enregistre avec un grand nombre de musiciens, qui apprécient à la fois son aisance sur l'alto et sur la flûte et ses talents d'improvisateur. Il participe ainsi pendant les années 60 à un grand nombre de sessions, principalement pour Blue Note, aux côtés de plus grands noms de ce label : Grant Green, Wayne Shorter, Stanley Turrentine, Horace Silver, Bobby Hutcherson, Larry Young, Hank Mobley, McCoy Tyner, Sam Rivers, Lee Morgan, Duke Pearson. Un certain nombre de ces disques resteront toutefois longtemps inédits. Lui-même aurait pu devenir l'un des artistes de la compagnie, mais la proposition qu'on lui fit alors (enregistrer un album dans la veine jazz-funk, à l'instar de ceux de Lou Donaldson, à visée essentiellement commerciale) l'y fait renoncer.

Au début des années 70, il se produit avec Bobby Hutcherson et le chanteur Leon Thomas. En 1971, il essaye infructueusement de monter son propre label : East, pour lequel il enregistre un 45 tours. On le voit au sein du Newport All Stars rassemblé par George Wein. Après quelques disques en moyenne formation avec Archie Shepp et sa contribution à la réussite du célèbre "The Creator Has A Master Plan" de Pharoah Sanders, Spaulding disparaît des studios mais donne des concerts à New York en petite formation, souvent dans des cadres universitaires. Lui-même passe plusieurs diplomes à la Rutgers University. On le retrouve en 1975 avec Kenny Barron, et il signe enfin son premier disque, un hommage à Duke Ellington, en 1976. L'année précédente, il avait d'ailleurs fait partie de l'orchestre d'Ellington placé sous la direction de Mercer Ellington. Durant cette période, de 1972 à 1975, il est professeur adjoint à la Rutgers University où il prend part à de nombreux workshops (avec Budd Johnson, Clark Terry, Randy Weston, Sonny Rollins, Jo Jones, Milt Hinton, Milt Jackson, Bob Wilber, Charles Davis).

Associé ensuite à Woody Shaw, Alvin Queen, Ricky Ford (avec qui il enregistre à plusieurs reprises), Randy Weston de nouveau, il commence à travailler régulièrement avec David Murray en 1987: il joue dans l'octette et le big band du saxophoniste ténor et est l'invité du World Saxophone Quartet. 1987, c'est aussi le temps des retrouvailles avec Art Blakey au cours d'un festival au Japon, et en 1989 avec Sun Ra.

En 1988, James Spaulding est pris sous contrat par la compagnie Muse, pour laquelle il enregistre un hommage à Monk et trois autres disques, puis, à partir de 1996, par la compagnie HighNote. Sur chacun de ses albums, il joue de la flûte, de la flûte basse, du piccolo et bien sûr, brillamment, de l'alto. Il ne manque pas non plus de rendre hommage à des musiciens de sa génération ou de la précédente que l'Histoire a tendance à sous-estimer : Elmo Hope, Tina Brooks, Freddie Redd, Clifford Jordan, Idrees Sulieman et surtout, Hank Mobley.

Avec le big band de David Murray, il rend hommage à la musique de Duke Ellington, et avec l'octette, à John Coltrane en 1999. Il se produit aussi au sein du True Blue All-Stars qui regroupe plusieurs musiciens associés à l'histoire du label Blue Note sous la houlette de Billy Higgins.

James Spaulding est l'auteur d'une pièce orchestrale intitulé Songs of Courage.
